The chronology and life of Nicolas Poussin’s The Crossing of the Red Sea and its dant, The Adoration of the Golden Calf (National Gallery, London), is well known and thoroughly documented. Both were commissioned in 1632 for the wealthy Amedeo dal Pozzo, marchese Voghera (1579-1644), the elder cousin Poussin’s most influential Roman patron and porter, Cassiano dal Pozzo (1588-1657). Poussin completed both paintings in 1634.
