Paper has preserved human knowledge, creativity, and memory for centuries through manuscripts, books, maps, photographs, artworks, and archival records. Yet these materials are inherently fragile and vulnerable to damage caused by light, humidity, pollutants, pests, handling, and the natural aging process.

Fragile Histories: Preserving Paper Through Time is a multimedia exhibition that explores the art and science of paper conservation. Through original objects, before and after conservation photographs, conservation tools and materials, and examples of different types of paper deterioration, the exhibition reveals the challenges of preserving paper-based heritage. Visitors will encounter objects affected by tears, discoloration, water damage, mold, insect activity, and other forms of degradation, gaining insight into the factors that threaten their survival.

A highlight of the exhibition is an immersive walk through conservation laboratory, offering a behind the scenes look at the methods and decision making involved in conserving fragile paper artefacts. By making conservation processes visible and accessible, the exhibition celebrates the work of conservators and emphasizes the importance of preserving our shared documentary heritage for future generations.

Fragile Histories invites visitors to discover how careful conservation ensures that the stories recorded on paper continue to inform, inspire, and connect us across time.
