A summer of conservation projects began last month at the Archaeological Site of Stobi in North Macedonia! After hearing good things about the site and their work, I was thrilled to be invited to work as an Assistant Instructor for the “Workshop for Conservation of Roman and Late Roman Mosaics.” Hosted by National Institution Stobi and the Balkan Heritage Foundation & Field School, the workshop welcomed a group of international students who spent three weeks learning about the process of mosaic conservation.

While working on a 4th/5th century mosaic, students were able to gain experience in
-technical documentation
-mechanical cleaning
-removing previous interventions
-preparing glues, consolidants, and mortars
-edge repair
-detachment
-retouching

The students did an excellent job and by the end of the workshop, the mosaic was stabilized for years to come✨
